business meeting

For some time now, the indie movie scene has been in a period of immense, transformative change. Given the way that independent development is beginning to become so popular, it’s no surprise.

Fans of major genres are now more interested in investing in ideas that aren’t driven by profit.

The state of the ‘main’ movie industry means there is a constant rush to meet market trends. From rushing out a movie to try and meet with what is popular on social media to trying to cash in on major movements and trends, this is disturbingly common. Indie content is often still about the original intent and the art, though.

With that in mind, then, what makes the indie movie scene so popular?

What trends are taking place at the moment that could help inspire you to creating something special yourself?

  • · Rememory. A fine example of an indie movie going down a more exciting route is best seen in Rememory. Starring Peter Dinklage, this interesting piece by Mark Palansky has certainly got people inspired. The film is built around Gordon Dunn, a scientist who develops a machine that can capture human memories. He dies unexpectedly, though, and his own device becomes an integral part in trying to work out what happened to him. Definitely one to see for fans of more abstract drama.
  • · Gook. The abruptly named but emotionally powerful Gook by Justin Chon is 100% worth your time. This is a fantastic watch that’s all about making the right choice in life, even amongst immense racial and ethnic tension. It’s created a bit of a trend of trying to separate movies into ‘parts’ and it helps to create a very interesting kind of viewing experience. It’s all about breaking boundaries with love and also shines a light on the distracting nature of hatred.
  • · A Ghost Story. David Lowery’ latest indie masterpiece is a trip well worth your time. It’s all about building on a very interesting story about loss, leaving behind the past and trying to break free from the things that give us most comfort. In an era where people are as unsentimental as they could be, this creates a really interesting contrast with that of the throwaway culture of most of our lives. Definitely worth your time if you enjoy more abstract, immersive artwork.
  • · Last Days in the Desert. Starring Ewan McGregor, this is a very interesting movie that very much could help to inspire others. It was a long part of a range of religious-themed movies, the work of Emmanuel Lubezki helps to create an enticing drama. It’s a very impressive performance, and delivers a very rich inspection of how we view ‘good’ and ‘evil’ – something we are seeing more and more in movies.

If your budget does not stretch to allow you to simply invest in imagery, the story and the theme has to be spot on. With the movies above, you can see a rising trend of spending less on effects and investing more time into creating a meaningful tale. If you feel like the movie industry at the top end is too bloated to make a good point any longer, consider any of the above movies.

Each is a fine example of the indie trend to tell an incredible tale other simply blowing the viewer away with high-budget effects.
